← Fundamentals of Cybersecurity

Lesson 1 of 34 Beginner ~8 min

What is cybersecurity?

Welcome to the very first lesson. We will start from zero and assume you have never worked in IT. By the end you will understand, in simple words, what cybersecurity is and why it matters to you.

What is it?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, phones, networks, and the information on them from theft, damage, and misuse. Think of it as the digital version of locking your doors, installing an alarm, and keeping your valuables in a safe.

Everything we do online — messaging, banking, shopping, storing photos — creates digital information. Cybersecurity is everything we do to keep that information safe, correct, and available when we need it.

Why is it important?

Almost every part of modern life depends on technology: your bank, your hospital, your school, and the electricity in your home. If attackers break into these systems, they can steal money, leak private information, or shut down services that people rely on.

  • Your personal data (passwords, photos, messages) has real value to criminals.
  • Businesses can lose money and customer trust after a single breach.
  • Essential services like power, water, and healthcare can be disrupted.

How does it work?

Cybersecurity works in layers, a bit like protecting a castle. No single wall stops every attacker, so defenders stack several protections on top of each other:

  • People — training users to spot scams and use strong passwords.
  • Processes — rules such as “always back up important files”.
  • Technology — tools like antivirus, firewalls, and encryption.

Text description of this diagram

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, programs and data from digital attacks, loss and unauthorised access.

A real-world example

When you log in to your bank app, several cybersecurity controls work together without you noticing: your password proves who you are, a one-time code confirms it is really you, and encryption scrambles the connection so no one can read it. If any of these failed, a stranger could empty your account.

Check what you learned

In one sentence, what is cybersecurity?

The practice of protecting computers, networks, and the information on them from theft, damage, and misuse.

Does cybersecurity rely on technology alone?

No. It combines people (training), processes (rules), and technology (tools). All three layers matter.

Key takeaways

  • Cybersecurity keeps digital information safe, correct, and available.
  • It matters because nearly everything we do depends on technology.
  • It works in layers: people, processes, and technology together.
