Why cybersecurity matters

In the last lesson you learned what cybersecurity is. Now let us look at why it has become one of the most important topics of our time.

What is it?

The importance of cybersecurity comes down to one idea: the more we depend on technology, the more we have to lose if it fails or is attacked. Today we depend on it for almost everything.

Why is it important?

Cyberattacks are no longer rare events. They happen every day, to individuals and giant companies alike. The damage shows up in four main ways:

Text description of this diagram

Attacks cost money, leak private information, damage trust and can stop essential services from working.

  • Money — stolen funds, fraud, and the high cost of cleaning up after an attack.
  • Privacy — personal data such as health records or private messages leaking out.
  • Trust — customers leave a business they no longer feel safe with.
  • Safety — attacks on hospitals, power grids, or cars can put lives at risk.

How does it work?

Good cybersecurity reduces risk. We can rarely make risk zero, but we can make attacks harder, slower, and less rewarding. When an attack is too much effort for too little reward, most attackers move on to an easier target.

A useful mindset: you do not have to be perfectly secure, just harder to attack than the next target. Basic protections stop the large majority of everyday attacks.

A real-world example

In 2017 a piece of ransomware called WannaCry spread across the world in hours. It locked computers in hospitals, factories, and offices in over 150 countries. Hospitals had to turn away patients because they could not access records. The weakness it used had a fix available for weeks — organisations that had simply applied the update were protected.

Check what you learned

Name two of the four main ways a cyberattack causes damage.

Any two of: money, privacy, trust, and safety.

Can cybersecurity make risk zero?

No. The goal is to reduce risk — making attacks harder, slower, and less rewarding so most attackers give up.

Key takeaways

  • The more we depend on technology, the more a cyberattack can cost us.
  • Damage shows up as lost money, lost privacy, lost trust, and risks to safety.
  • Security is about reducing risk, not achieving perfection.
