Fortinet FortiGate

Overview

FortiGate is Fortinet’s next-generation firewall (NGFW) line, running the FortiOS operating system. It combines firewalling, intrusion prevention, VPN, web filtering and SD-WAN, and many models use custom security processors (ASICs) to accelerate inspection. FortiGate is a central part of Fortinet’s broader Security Fabric.

Text description of this diagram

FortiGate inspects traffic between the internet and the internal network, using FortiGuard services for threat intelligence.

Key features

  • Firewall, intrusion prevention (IPS), VPN and application control in one platform.
  • Integrated SD-WAN for secure, optimised branch connectivity.
  • FortiGuard subscription services for threat intelligence and content inspection.
  • Custom security processors (ASICs) on many models to accelerate inspection.
  • Security Fabric integration across Fortinet products.

Strengths

  • Strong performance-per-cost, helped by purpose-built hardware acceleration.
  • A broad, consolidated feature set covering firewall, VPN and SD-WAN.
  • Wide range of models from small branch to large data-centre appliances.
  • Tight integration with the wider Fortinet Security Fabric.

Limitations to weigh

  • Managing many devices and policies can get complex at large scale.
  • Full capability depends on active FortiGuard subscription services.
  • The feature-rich interface has a learning curve for newcomers.

Deployment options

FortiGate is available as physical appliances across many sizes, as virtual machines for private clouds, and as virtual instances in public clouds — so the same operating system and policy model can span the whole estate.

Integrations

  • The Fortinet Security Fabric (FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, FortiSwitch, FortiAP and more).
  • Third-party SIEM and automation through APIs and logging.
  • Cloud platforms for hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.

Licensing

FortiGate combines the appliance or virtual-machine cost with FortiGuard subscription services for threat intelligence and content inspection. Confirm current model options, service bundles and pricing with the vendor or a partner.

Ideal use cases

  • Branch and campus edge security with integrated SD-WAN.
  • Organisations wanting a consolidated NGFW rather than separate point products.
  • Environments that value hardware-accelerated inspection performance.

This is an independent editorial overview based on publicly available vendor documentation and general industry knowledge. It is a demonstration review: it is not a paid placement, a hands-on lab test, or a benchmark, and it does not assign a numeric rating. Always confirm current specifications, licensing and pricing with the vendor before making a decision.
